Office Filing Vertical vs Lateral Files
Posted by Jack Roberts
We purchased for a file room vertical files. The main key reason we selected vertical files rather than lateral files is that we had the space to use the deep 28" vertical files. The cost of the vertical files per linear inch was less than the lateral files. I would not use them in the main office area where esthetics may be an issue. The lateral files look better and are not as deep (20" or so). So, if you are looking for the best price per inch of filing, use verticals files. Remember, vertical files come in letter and legal widths, so be sure to order the right size. Locks may or may not be included.

We have lateral files and needed shell storage in addition. We used an over
file unit that had doors that was sent over the lateral file. The overfile had
sliding doors and an adjustable shelf. The highest shelf need a small step stool
for the smaller people to get at - but it worked well. Also the Global
lateral files have drawers that the upper drawers in the filing cabinets are
deep enough to store binders in. This is a great feature for a lateral file and
may eliminate the need for the over file, The drawers of the lateral file
can be used for both legal and letter hanging files as well as for binders,
